Incident Details
On January 3 at around 1:45 a.m., Kelly Crispin and her fiancé, Omar Padilla Vélez, were driving back to his family’s residence in Puerto Rico after a night of dancing when they mistakenly veered off the Calle Cerra nightlife strip. Within moments, their vehicle was surrounded by a group of masked gunmen armed with AR-style rifles at the intersection of Calle Blanca and Calle La Nueva Palma, Crispin recounted.
As Padilla Vélez attempted to escape the encirclement, the group opened fire. Padilla Vélez suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, while Crispin was hit in the hand and shoulder and also grazed on the back of her head. A friend accompanying them was unharmed.
Aftermath and Medical Response
After the gunfire ceased, one of the assailants approached the vehicle, seizing Crispin’s phone while she tried to call for help. Startled to find a woman inside, the attackers returned her phone without taking anything else.
In a desperate attempt to save him, Crispin and her friend transported Padilla Vélez to a nearby gas station, where they encountered an ambulance. Unfortunately, he later suffered a catastrophic stroke caused by a bullet fragment and died in the hospital.
Crispin’s Plea for Justice
Crispin has publicly expressed her frustration over the lack of media coverage and pressure on law enforcement to resolve the case. “No one knows that this very smart, young Puerto Rican man was murdered,” she stated. Despite Padilla Vélez’s familiarity with the area, which is generally considered safe, the tragic incident has left a significant emotional scar.
