Calallen Wildcats Football Team Gives Back to Veterans with ‘Heaters for Heroes’
The Calallen Wildcats football team is not only focused on their upcoming state quarterfinal game but is also committing to community service through a new initiative called “Heaters for Heroes.” This charitable effort has resonated with players, who are channeling their competitive spirit into a project that supports local veterans in need.
Key Points / What’s New
- The initiative was sparked by David Salinas Jr. from the United Veterans Burial Association after learning about local veterans facing heating challenges.
- Players from the Wildcats team have already contributed 15 space heaters to veterans.
- The youth involvement aims to foster awareness of community needs beyond athletic pursuits.
Community Service Initiative
David Salinas Jr. initiated “Heaters for Heroes” after he was informed by a veteran about a broken heater. He approached his son, David Salinas III, and his friends on the Wildcats football team to help spread warmth during the chilly season.
Salinas III, a junior quarterback, expressed that this initiative allows him to feel connected to his community in a profound way, emphasizing the importance of altruism beyond the football field. “It helps me know that I’m invested in the community whether it’s not necessarily doing something on the field,” he stated.
Skyler Rubio, a senior wide receiver, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Just trying to help the veterans that do so much for us, so why not do a little for them during the holidays?” Their dedication has inspired younger players to contribute, demonstrating the project’s ripple effect within the team.
Impact on Veterans
As the initiative gains momentum, 15 heaters have already been delivered to veterans. Samuel Juarez, the secretary and Chaplain of the United Veterans Burial Association, highlighted the timely assistance, noting that the feedback from recipients has been overwhelmingly positive. “They really appreciate someone taking time out of their day just to make sure they’re doing OK,” he said.
The motivation behind this work stems from a desire to cultivate awareness among young athletes about the needs in their community. As Salinas Jr. noted, the project has encouraged even freshmen players, like Drayson Gamez, to get involved, further expanding the initiative’s reach.
Ongoing Efforts
The “Heaters for Heroes” project will continue as long as cold weather persists, with plans to switch focus to providing fans for veterans once temperatures rise. Salinas Jr. encourages any veterans in need or those wishing to contribute to contact his office at 361-668-5715.
